Match Report - Kellingley Welfare v Ripon City

1 year ago By Daniel Metcalfe

0-4 Away win

Saturday saw me take a strong squad away to Kellingley Welfare who sat just below Ripon in the league. Micky was still sunning himself on some far away shore so I was in charge.
Squad changes Out/Unavailable, Mason, Bland, Hutchinson, Puttock, Tulip, the latter two were playing for the reserves, Gracey still unavailable due to work. In Marsden, Baldwin, Wise and Wox.
Ripon started well, although not testing the Kellingley keeper in the opening attacks. Brook in the Ripon goal was called into action 1st, a shot from the edge of the box was saved and the follow up shot was saved well by the quick reacting Brook. Ripon began applying some pressure and from a corner got the opening goal through Marsden, Wise took the corner and Marsden managed to get enough on the delivery to direct it goalwards...0-1.
Ripon one up should have took control of the game but some sloppy/nervous play was putting us under pressure, instead of calm heads we were panicking a bit, however nothing threatened the Ripon goal, Brook having to make a save from a free kick about the only thing I can remember.
Ripon then had a great chance to take the lead a ball in from the left found Fox at the back post...over the bar! The hard working front two were causing problems for the back line of Kellingley, Dalton in the wars after a few strong challenges on him and Haswell buzzing around trying to pinch the ball.
Haswell then got Ripon’s second, closing down the Kellingley defender he got the ball and rounded the keeper to make it 2-0 shortly before HT.
Half time team talk and we knew we were comfortable, it was only us who were going to let this game slip. I reiterated we needed to start sharply in the 2nd half and we didn’t!
Kellingley started the better team and Ripon were again on the back foot, after soaking up early pressure Ripon were looking strong moving forward. Hodgson, Tinsley, Dalton and Haswell looking sharp moving forward, Fox and Wise linking well, a third looked likely!
Ripon got a corner through work from Hodgson and Fox and the corner from Hodgson fell to Haswell who’s footwork on the edge of the box found some space and his shot was to powerful from the edge of the box, 0-3.
Ripon made their 1st sub Wise was replaced by Wox. Hodgson had another chance when put through but couldn’t finish, he was due a goal. Dalton was taking off and replaced by Williams with less than 20mins to go.
Ripon got their 4th through Hodgson a well deserved goal. Before the end Ripon could have made it more. A penalty decision was waved away at the other end but can’t quite remember when this was during the 2nd half.
FT 0-4
100 % record on the road this season, a clean sheet, 6 points while Micky has been away, after a good holiday he will return to a buoyant squad. He was on to me after the game saying he was looking for a job over there as feared for his job when he got back. He’s struggling to put two words together, can’t decide whether that is the language or too much drink 

Next week it’s looking likely we’ll be at home to Garforth Rangers.
Team: Brook, Levy, Marsden, Baldwin, Clarke, Tinsley, Fox, Wise, Hodgson, Haswell, Dalton
Subs: Williams, Wox, Metcalfe (not used)
