Ripon welcomed AFC Horsforth for the 2nd time this season, this time it was the league cup 1st round. Ripon were well beaten in the last encounter 5-1 early in the season.
Micky had a few changes from last week, Puttock, Groves and Taylor-Widdowson coming into the squad.
Ripon started the game well on top for majority of the opening period. Baldwin creating a great chance for himself, with some sort of sublime flick on the edge of the box but his shot couldn’t beat the keeper.
Hodgson had begun the game brightly on the left and the same could be said for Wox on the right. Ripon just had to be patient and could sense an opening would come.
Early on in the 2nd half Ripon took the lead through Baldwin, a ball through from Wox and Baldwin finished well 1-0.
Ripon then began to allow Horsforth back into the game and there was a spell where they looked like they may create the equaliser.
Hodgson was having a good game and was getting joy out wide. Micky was forced into his 1st sub with around 60 minutes played, Wox connecting with the opponents leg and going down in pain, we’ve found out today he’s broke his foot! Groves replace Wox.
Ripon were getting joy on the break as Horsforth were pushing for the equaliser. Haswell hit the post after some good trickery in the box, Baldwin wasn’t happy he didn’t square it for a tap in. A few dubious offside decisions didn’t go Ripon’s way as the game moved into the last 15 minutes.
The hard working Hodgson then got the winner for Ripon with less than 10 to go, he broke down the left and smashed it with his left foot inside the box into the roof of the net! 2-0
Puttock then replaced Wise late on.
Ripon move into the next round of the cup, next opponents are Ossett Albion in the County Cup, again opponents that have beat us at home earlier on this season.
A mention to Brenna Taylor-Widdowson making his debut in the Ripon goal and keeping a clean sheet just days after turning 16.
Scorers: Baldwin, Hodgson
