Saturday saw Ripon travel to Baildon Trinity Athletic off the back of a heavy defeat the week before. Chariman Peter and I were in charge as Micky was attending a family wedding.
There were a few changes from last week’s squad, Taylor-Widdowson, Spence, Tinsley and Groves all unavailable due to work and other commitments. In came Bland, Blanchard, Tulip and Metcalfe.
Ripon started the game positively and were in the lead around the 10 minute mark, Fox with a free kick outside the box found the back of the net, the keeper scrambling but unable to keep it out. 0-1 Ripon continued to dominate the game and Baildon were pumping everything long.
As the half went on Baildon were getting more joy with the direct football, Metcalfe making a couple of saves but not a lot of clear chances being created by the home team. Fox up the other end had a header that went wide from a corner
Just as the half was coming to an end a ball which should have been headed back to Metcalfe by Hutchinson was directed straight to their striker who was in on goal and slotted it past the on rushing Metcalfe, 1-1
Half time talk was about keeping switched on as we had gone to sleep for 20 minutes and allowed Baildon back into the game.
The 2nd half was a close affair but Baildon took the lead around 15 mins in, a strange decision from the ref not calling a high boot allowed the ball to break to the Baildon player who finished well. 2-1
Less than half way through the 2nd half and Ripon were 3-1 down. The ball wasn’t cleared by the Ripon defence and Baildon got their third slotting the ball past Metcalfe.
Ripon kept battling and a few yellow cards were picked up by Ripon players, with less than 15 to go Ripon got their 2nd through Fox again, a free kick by Hutchinson found Fox at the back post who headed into the net 3-2.
There was still plenty of time for Ripon to get back into the game, they had a few chances, Bland with probably the best chance from a corner, his header going high and wide. Clarke had a shot from distance as well which he saw rise over the bar.
Nearly last kick of the game as Ripon were pushing for the equaliser Baildon broke and Metcalfe rushed out of his box only to see player go round him, Blanchard was unable to stop the Baildon player having a shot which found the back of the net! 4-2
Ripon’s performance was better than last week and we looked like we might get something out of the game late on. We move on now to a tough game at home to the unbeaten Rawdon.
