Ripon travelled to Carlton today in the League Cup, Carlton a team who are at the top of the West Yorkshire Premier League.
Players missing today Edmunds, Spence, Shaw, Barker due to wok and injuries. In came Metcalfe in goal and Howes returned.
Ripon started the game positively closing Carlton down at every chance, the playing surface was nice considering all the rain recently.
Carlton creating some half chances but Ripon defending well as a team. Carlton however broke the deadlock around the 20 min mark, a ball splitting the Ripon defence and an onrushing Metcalfe was beat to the ball which was tapped past him into an open net. 1-0
Carlton never really troubled Ripon again in the 1st half, a few shots from distance but Ripon went into the half time break losing by the one goal.
The second half started slowly for Ripon and Ripon conceded the 2nd goal inside 5 mins. A free header from a corner. 2-0
3-0 soon followed, a free kick was floated in and a flick header at the front post was finished well, the ball went in off the far post.
Ripon gathered some composure and kept working hard. Fletcher and Woodbridge in the middle of the park working well and Fox and Gracey having solid games at the back.
Howes had the best chance so far in the game with a good passing move in the build up but was unable to find his footing at the vital moment.
Ripon concede the 4th with 20 mins to go, the Carlton sub shooting early and Metcalfe slipped in the goal and was unable to get near the shot 4-0.
The 5th was a stone wall penalty conceded by Howes and the penalty taker sent Metcalfe the wrong way.
Ripon finally had their 1st shot on target, a late free kick, Fox made the keeper work with a fine free kick which was well saved by the Carlton keeper.
Ripon can hold their heads high, they worked right to the end and 5 probably flattered Carlton who will be in with a big shout of winning the Premier League.
Ripon have some massive games coming up over the next month against teams all down at the bottom of the 1st division. The management team are still confident of getting out of the relegation zone and today's performance did nothing to change that. We need to be creating more chances but that will come if we work together and believe in each other abilities.
