Ripon City v Featherstone Colliery (League)

2 years ago By Daniel Metcalfe

3 points!!!!!!!!

Result 3-2

Today's game saw the manager Baldwin return after a week away. Ripon had a full strength squad. Mason returning from injury, Vincent putting the boots on for 1st time this season, Howes returned from trials with North of England team, Robinson from suspension and Abbott was also in the squad for 1st time this season.

Nothing other than 3 points required today....Baldwin had given Gracey a chance up front today, bit of a change from his usual defensive position. Gracey was involved inside 5 mins with a penalty shout which was waved away by the ref. Edmunds also involved inside 10mins with a shot over the bar from a cross.

11 mins gone and Ripon were behind, a break saw Ripon defence step up on the half way line and the Featherstone striker was clean threw and finished past the Ripon keeper Shaw.

The next 20mins saw neither team create a lot, Barker with a shot past the post from a corner was Ripon's best chance. 34mins in saw Robinson booked for a lunging tackle about 25 yards out, the resulting free kick didn't come to anything.

34 mins in and another penalty shout to Ripon, Fox drifting in from the left wing and had was caught on the calf but didn't go down and turned to look at the ref who waved the shouts away. Fox trying to stay on his feet but the decision didn't go our way. HT

Change for Ripon for the start of the 2nd half saw Clarke replaced by Abbott and Gracey was dropped back to left back.

Ripon started the half the brighter team, 57 mins in and Abbott had a great chance a cross from the right and his header was directed wide from 6 yards out.

60 mins Vincent was replaced by Howes this allowed Fox to return to the middle of the park.

65 mins saw Ripon equalise a free kick from out wide saw a good delivery by Mason flicked on and into the net by Ripon's captain Barker. 1-1

70 mins Featherstone had a clear chance a cross low across the box about 5 yards out but no Featherstone player there to finish.

72 mins Mason was replaced by Stewart.

74 mins Ripon take the lead through Abbott, a hint of offside but he finished well past the Featherstone keeper. Surely Ripon would go on to win the game.

83 mins in Edmunds had a great chance as he was put through with their keeper rushing out he lobbed the keeper but the shot went wide.

86 mins Matt "Grobbelaar"Shaw Ripon's keeper then had a let off, he came out of the box near the touchline to retrieve the ball and turned to dribble back into his box but was unaware there was a player waiting to tackle him he managed to get back into the box and drop on it close to the edge of the box. Featherstone appealing he'd handled outside.

88 mins and Ripon conceded, Barker unable to clear the ball and was dispossessed and the Featherstone player with a finish from just inside our box. 2-2, surely not another draw and points thrown away. Howes had to come off with a twisted knee after a challenge, Ripon down to 10 men.

91st min Ripon scored the winner, a break from Ripon saw Robinson with a good run and he found Abbott with the pass, Abbott with a lovely shot with the outside of his right boot to send the Ripon bench wild with celebrations.

With the last kick of the game Ripon were let off the hook, a cross from Featherstone deep into injury time saw their player put the shot over the bar from close range. Relief!

First win of the season was well deserved, hopefully this will give the team a boost and we can start a move up the table.
